Essay Sample on Placebo Effects Based on Personal Experience

Essay Sample on Placebo Effects Based on Personal Experience Placebo is a case when a patients sickness can be cured by fake treatment, visibly because the patient believes that it would work. This is a very noteworthy face of the human physiology. Placebo is derived from Latin, meaning I shall please.   Placebo has two related meanings, which are: (1) A substance containing no medication but prescribed or given to reinforce a patients expectation to get well; (2) An inactive substance or treatment used as a control in an experiment to test the effectiveness of a drug or medical treatment. (Mechanisms of Placebo Effects) Experience: I believe that Placebo effects do exist in real, whether we believe them or not. There are numerous examples and experiments conducted which have clearly indicated the Placebo effects. I had a similar experience as well. Last year my young friend’s family and close relatives went on a picnic. There, instead of using a suntan lotion, their aunt suggested them to use her latest magic pen on their foreheads, which would protect against radiation. All the kids lined up, and her Aunt kept writing ad slogans and song titles on each ones forehead. As the ink was transparent, no one had any idea what was written. A few weeks later, her aunt asked all the kids regarding their experiences after the new style of sun tanning. Many kids had infact experienced a change in peoples attitude towards them. They reported that their peers and teachers seemed attracted towards them, and my friend noticed getting more and better attention from sales clerks. It was only then when her Aunt had told them that she had infact written on just one of the kids foreheads, and the rest had gibberish written (with water!). The effects of that were almost generally seen on all the kids. This was a very clear experience of Placebo effect, as all the kids were experiencing a changed attitude even tough they had no change in their appearance.

International Business - Cultural Differences Essay

International Business - Cultural Differences - Essay Example With specific reference to HRM and marketing, this essay will examine the potential problems which a UK owned hotel, operating in China and Russia, among numerous other countries, may confront. In order to understand the challenges which the UK-owned hotel may confront in the management of its operations in China and Russia, it is important to begin with a clarification of the implications of the culture construct. The reason is that since culture has been identified as the source of challenges, it is necessary to know why and how it can function as a challenge to cross-cultural management for the purposes of constructively confronting and resolving these challenges. As an ever-present force of concern to all social sciences, culture represents an abstract and extremely complex construct. Attempts by scholars to define culture have resulted in countless definitions. For example, in their seminal study on culture, Kroeber and Kluckhohn (1952) identified more than 160 definitions of culture. Although there is probably no single best definition of culture, the main thread running through the numerous definitions of culture, as noted by Hall (2004) is that the construct of culture appears to have the following characteristics: Culture is multidimensional and interrelated. ... Culture is multidimensional and interrelated. It consists of a number of common and interdependent elements such as beliefs and attitudes, values and norms. All aspects of culture are deeply connected with one another; to change one part is to change the whole. It is the interaction of various elements of culture that results in cultural distinctiveness. Culture is shared by the members of a social group and defines the boundaries between different groups. Culture is adaptive. Culture and its values, though enduring in the short term, do change over time. Cultural meanings are not static, but constantly in motion. Culture continues to evolve through constant embellishment and adaptation to both physical and social environments. Culture includes both conscious and unconscious values, and other meaningful symbols that shape human behaviour. Cultural differences are not necessarily visible, especially to people who remain embedded in one cultural environment. It takes a prolonged stay abroad and mingling with the locals to recognize the numerous and often subtle and hidden differences in various cultures. In sum, culture provides people with a sense of identity and an understanding of appropriate behaviour within a soda1 group. It has pervasive and profound impacts on virtually all aspects of human life. For instance, Harris and Moran (2005, pp. 206-211) have identified ten important areas pertaining to human values, attitudes. and behaviours that are directly influenced by culture: Sense of self and space; Communication and language; Dress and appearance; Food and feeding habits; Time and time consciousness; Relationships; Values and norms; Beliefs and attitudes; Mental process and learning; Work

Distributed databases Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Distributed databases - Research Paper Example Vertical partitioning involves creating of tables with fewer columns and utilizing additional tables to keep the outstanding columns. Normalization also comprises this partitioning of columns within tables, but vertical partitioning goes further than that and fragments columns even when normalized. Different physical storeroom might be applied to comprehend vertical fragmenting. Non relational databases initiated the idea of column based databases (Abuelyaman, 2008). The rationale for choosing this partitioning scheme is that it is cost efficient more than other schemes. In addition, it fits the required distributed databases required for this work. In order to surpass the limitations of accessible partitioning algorithm; a fresh algorithm known as VPartition, is recommended that enhances the performance of the current algorithm. The algorithm comprises an enhanced vertical partitioning system where cost is computed in terms of time utilizing greedy technique (Poniatowski & Safari Te ch Books Online, 2003). This leads to improved data consignment as compared to earlier approach. The characteristics of VPartition that comprises a series such as [I, T, TI, w, p, r, D, C comm., C route, N] where Recommended timing system to manage sale, purchase and management of data is a time warp. Time Warp system is a novel method for database concurrency management, varying from other kinds of systems in at least five respects (Jeffesron & Sowizral, 1999). First, it obeys an object-oriented strategy to database concept in which there are no prescribed distinctions between transaction u objects, system objects and Udata~ objects. Second, it uses neither abortion-and-retry nor locking to resolve right of entry conflicts. In its place, it employs a more influential synchronization instrument: broad rollback. The third unique feature is that it is free of starvation and deadlock. Another distinction is that it is

The practicality of agile development Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

The practicality of agile development - Essay Example They are being compared by the Agile method too. It’s been more than a decade, since agile development is being used for software development. It came as a result to the conventional and traditional software development processes and was an effort to improve the ways of software development. In general, agile means quick and fast, agile development set asides the conventional ways of software development, but still it is not necessary that agile is a solution to all the problems that is being faced by the development team. The agile manifesto focused mainly on customer satisfaction. It suggests the collaboration and cooperation with customer and manager through out the development process and also emphasize on the unity and teamwork by all the members of the team. Team must be self organizing and should be autonomous in a way that it can take decisions but must be in contact with the customer. Though it is suitable for only certain kinds of software but still it could be adopted by the developers and they can follow the manifesto to provide their customers good quality software on the time due. Agile team must be able keep its pace with the changes that are in the industry, so that they can come up with the work that is suitable per the market standards. Though if we read its principles that are being defined by The Agile Alliance, it gives us an idea that it could be the best methodology for the software development. The principles states that customer should be satisfied and his demands must be fulfilled throughout the project, and also the project must be submitted on time. Changes should be welcomed throughout this time and developers, managers and customers must be in contact with each other. The developers involved in the projects must be competent and cooperative and the team environment should be peaceful and comfortable for all team members. Good software should be chosen for development, design of the

Pirate Radio Music

Pirate Radio Music Pirate radio station is a station in UK. It is a site delivering pirate radio culture and music which is straight from the heart of London. It is also served through web server and screening real audio. It has played a crucial role in forming the Britains musical test. Today, the waves of the pirate radio station in the cities are so much crowded to the extend that the pirates are been pushed to the suburbs and the country side. It is through these that the people from the rural communities have been in a position to access these services which most of the radio stations have not achieved. Today the members from the rural communities can now have the opportunity to listen on what is happening all over the world through the many programmes which are made by this radio station. As a result most of the people have named it a nerve center and its headquarter is of Essex top pirate radio station. What was crucial for the growth of the pirate radio station was the incorporation of the new technology in the performance of its many activities. This radio station has used the new technology and these are some of the factors on how this new technology has made the pirate radio to prosper. You find that the transistors were now abit hugly smaller and also for the first time, these transistors were transportable. It was doe to the new technology that there was a drop in the hardware price. It was due to the drop of the hardware price that most of the activities could be done effectively hence leading the company to realize its competitive advantage. You find that for a company to grow, first it needs to maintain its costs since when costs are more than the profits, then definitely the company will lead to losses. But here we see that the hardware could be sold at a cheap price hence meaning that its costs were less than the profits leading to the realization of the competitive advantage. The introduction of the clearer and the cheaper FM brand is also another way by which the pirate radio has benefited from the new technology. Once the microwave technology came in to play, it means that this transmitter was in a different location which was different from where the pirates broadcasted from and this is a cheap hardware which can be easily got and replaced when stolen. (Jo Tacchi, 2001). If you tune around that FM band in London, you will find a large number of pirate radio stations. These stations are highly recognizable since they have differentiated themselves from the other stations so that then can realize their competitive advantage. One of their distinctive features is there distinctive sounds. You find that at the pirate radio station, they usually play different sounds which are so different from the other stations. Often you find them playing certain musical styles such as House, UK garage, Drum n Bass, reggae, Grime plus other numerous old skools genres. All these are personal but try to catch so many people hence you find that most of the people usually try to tune in to the pirate radio station so that they can listen at the music playing which is so much attractive. Most of these musics which are played are usually aimed at certain societies and communities so that the can be in a position to learn from them. It is in this music that most of the communities can have the chance to listen songs from their own languages. Many people tend to enjoy these types of songs since most of them are usually more of traditional and telling them about there own culture hence many people can not avoid listening to them. (Jo Tacchi, 2001). Impacts of the pirate radio station in the United Kingdom Pirate radio has done a great deal for the house music and this is done by feeding the public with all the latest underground music despite the fact that it has not been in a position to get the credit it really deserves. You find that this is one of the most entertainment stations in the United Kingdom in the sense that it has been in a position to keep most of the people here fully involved in most of their free times. Music industry is one of the growing sectors not only in the United Kingdom but also in other countries. It is through music that people have been in a position to utilize most of their free times hence leading to less criminals in the society. So you tend to find that its through the pirate radio station that most of the people can spent most of their free times listening to music, news and other records which are produced by the radio station. You find that most of the music usually carries important messages and most of the people can learn from this particular mu sic. Most of the people can change their behaviors through listening to these musics and pirate is a good example since most of the people in united kingdom usually like listening to radio pirate simply because it is well organized. It has a good schedule of doing its activities hence you find that most of the people like listening to its since its so much convenient. They have a variety of programs and these programs always have their set time hence people can be in a position to fix themselves on the p[particular program they really want to listen. It is also not biased like other radio stations. So you find that there is a lot of fun in radio pirate since its not biased at all and it has good music and entertainment which is liked by so many people. People are then in a position to benefit from pirate radio through its many programs, music, entertainment and also news. The whole of the house in the music industry also benefits from the pirate radio since in pirate radio, they pum p out all the current tunes along with all the music favorites and this can be seen as helping keep the scene more alive and also helps by selling huge amounts of new records and also by increasing the total number of DJs in this industry. (Colin, 1996). Promoters benefited through advertisements Many companies and organization have been in a position to benefit from the station since you find that most of the new events or even new products and services which have been produced in the market can be advertised through the radio station hence making the potential customers to be in a position to access them. One a company has produced a new product; the only way it can get this product to the potential customers is through advertisements. The radio advertisements are usually so cheap and available to everyone that why most of the people have preferred this radio station in advertising this product. As a result many people will be in a position to get to know the new product which has been introduced in the market. You find that most of the new events by these promoters are advertised through the pirate radio hence leading to the growth of the economy. The pirate radio station will also benefit in that it has received so many clients who wish to advertise their many products in that particular station hence they have been in a position to record huge profits. Many people also benefit from the pirate radio station in that it tends to help the less fortunate in the society. Not everyone in the many societies we come from has been blessed with wealth. There are a few elements who are termed as poor simply because they can not help them and a good example is the disabled, orphans and the elderly in the United Kingdom. The pirate radio station has taken the initiative to help most of these people out of the many profits which they record. So its through this that even the less fortunate in the society have been in a position to have improved standards of living. (Colin, 1996). Record sales The pirate radio has had a big impact on the record sales. There is a symbiotic relationship between the pirate radio and the record sales industries. You find that the radio pirate has grown hand in hand with the recording industry in that most of these recorded usually use the radio to advertise their new songs among other things. As a result, you find that these people have been in a position to increase their sales in that they usually advertise them through the radio. They too charge few charges as when compared to other radio stations hence meaning that it has been giving good services and that is why most of the people in the United Kingdom use this particular radio. It is also not biased. Many of the Djs in UK have been in a position to excel in this industry through the radio pirate. You find that most of the DJs have been in a position to play their mixes over air. Most of these DJs market themselves through these stations since many funs in UK usually listen the pirate rad io. So when they are marketed, then they are in a position to sell more records hence increasing their living standards. Most of the Djs have become millionaires through this industry and this is out of the many record sales they get. They have been in a position to have increased standards of living which is the basic goals for most of these musicians. Due to the large number of people who usually listen at this particular radio station, it has been in a position to benefit a lot from it. (Sian, 1996). Job creation This particular radio station is one of the employment industries in most of the people in UK. Here you find that most of the young and the youth have been in a position to secure good jobs from this particular radio. It employs so many people so that they can be in a position to meet the growing demand of people. This is because most of the people like the business men, musicians, and government activities have relied so much on the radio pirate when advertising its many activities or even the new products which are produced in the market. It is as a result of this growing demand that many people have been in a position to get jobs through this industry. At the end of the day you find that the economy has been in a position to grow so much since unemployment is one of the leading factors to poverty in a country. You find that when there is a large number of people who are not employed, then it will mean that most of the countries resources will be used to help these people not worki ng. This is because the employed get the unemployed benefits so when they have a job, it will mean that the government will use these resources on other sectors which can be beneficial to all people and a good example is the education sector. So with this, the pirate radio has played a big role in occupying these people in the many roles which are available in this sector. This is because the radio station has so many departments and it is in these departments that many people have been in a position to secure good jobs. So you find that the society too benefits from this a lot. (Paddy, 1996). Increased economic growth Its through the pirate radio that the economy has been in a position to grow. This is because the music industry is one of the growing sectors not only in UK but also in other countries. So you find that due to the many profits which are got by the pirate radio station, the government has been in a position to get high revenues from highly taxing them. This is out of the many profits which they get. So you find that its through taxing these radio station that the government has been in a position to increase its economic growth. The money which is collected as tax can then be used in other important sectors like in the provision of free health services to the needy people in the society. Also it is out of the many profits which it gets that the members of the public have been in a position to benefit from the same through the selling of many shares. Since this particular sector accrues so many benefits, the members of the public have been in a position to benefit from the advantages of this company. This is through buying of the companies shares which are usually sold. Its through buying these shares that they have been in a position to have increased standards of living since this is a form of investment in that its through buying these shares that they sell them when there prices are high hence leading to huge profits from them. So you find that the members of the public have been in a position to benefit from the resources of the pirate radio and the many profits which are got by it. (Colin, 1996). Community development The pirate radio has benefited the communities so much through the various programmes which people listen from them. They usually introduce a number of programmes that are already having a number of impacts to the members of these societies. One of the programmes in this case in the community focus groups. This is one of the programmes which basically focus on the community activities hence its through listening these programmes that the community has been in a position to develop. The farmers plus other interest groups are usually asked by the radio station to identify key issues which they need to be aired to other people. A good example is the farmers in that they usually have a programme which is supposed to encourage farmers so that they can have increased production. Some of the successful farmers are usually brought in to the studio whereby they usually tell people how they have succeed through farming and the best tools and strategies which farmers can apply so that they can be in a position to succeed in farming. Its through these that most of the farmers in the communities can take time and try to learn from this particular radio station. Also some of the government officials are also invited to respond to the concerns which were raised by the various groups. So you find that when an issue has been brought by the particular interest group like the case with the farmers, then a government official who is specifically concerned with that sector is invited in the studio and tries to answer the many questions are asked by the interest groups. So this is one of the ways in which the pirate radio has brought the members of the community in to close contact with the government and they can air their grievances to them whenever there are matters which need to be discussed. As a result, the community has been in a position to benefit in that they can get the correct advice and the basics which they require from the government hence leading to community develop ment in return. (Kevin, 1998). Despite the advantages the pirate radio station has had, it also has some disadvantages to the people who normally watch at these stations. You find that most of the programs which are watched by people especially the young people could have some negative impacts on them. For example they have certain songs which can mislead most of the young people. So you will find that most of the young children usually spent most of their times listening to radio and this can have an impact on their performance in education. So when it comes to the young children in the society, the children will learn both the good and the bad languages which are in the music most of the musicians usually sing. At the end of the day you will find that the community will have so many deviants hence leading to immoral society. Another disadvantage is that is sometimes biased in that it tends to favour that government. So during times like during elections, the government will tend to use this particular media so that it can get most of the people in the society. These people are usually paid so that they can side with the government hence meaning that the members of the public will be misused through this particular radio station and tends to manipulate people to be on the side of the government. (Kevin, 1998). Conclusion Radio stations usually have a great impact to the members of the public. This is out of the many roles in which these radio stations have. Most of the radio stations usually have differentiated ways in which they present their activities and this is important in any organization since its one of the main ways by which an organization can realize its set goals and objectives. People would like listening to radio stations that have a diversified range of activities and programmes which would benefit people and the society at large. For instance they play the role of educating most people in the societies. For example the pirate radio station has taken the initiative of a good leader and hence does this through enlightening people on the society. It is through this initiative that the members of the public will tend to benefit through the many programmes which are facilitated. So the radio stations are very much crucial in ones life and one can imagine a world without a radio station. I t can as a result of the new technology and its one of the cheapest technology which most people can afford as when compared to other Medias like the television, the internet among others. As a result its through it that many people have been in a position to benefit through the education and the type of entertainment they get from them. So pirate radio station has made a difference in many people lives since they are not the same again. They have improved their living standards through listening the many programs which are found in this radio station. Reference Jo Tacchi, J. (2001): ‘Who listens to Radio? King Lear :: essays papers

King Lear In William Shakespeare’s classic play, King Lear, the title character gives a memorable speech that brings to light the effect of wealth on the way people perceive mistakes. When you were a kid and you did something wrong your mother or your father probably told you, â€Å"well everyone makes mistakes.† Lear adds another dimension to this concept. In more modern terms, his speech basically says that it’s much easier to detect sin and wrong in a man who bumbles around in filth with a shopping cart full of God-knows-what, all wrapped up in garbage bags, than it is in a man who pulls up in a Jaguar and is wealthy enough to hire people to floss his teeth. However, when King Lear actually delivered the speech, there were no Jaguars, and there was no dental floss. There probably weren’t even shopping carts or garbage bags. In fact, I’m quite sure there weren’t, so King Lear’s speech might not be quite as accurate now as it was in his time. It was a different society, a different world. In fact a particular situation of very recent time comes to mind, which shows just how outdated Lear’s speech might be, since there was of course no crack cocaine back then. Most people who pay attention to current events will know where I’m going with this. Last week I was flipping through the newspaper (keep that in mind) when a very familiar name caught my attention. Ex-baseball star Darryl Strawberry had once again been arrested for a series of completely ridiculous and outrageous behaviors. â€Å"Sinful,† in more King Learly terms would be an understatement when addressing Strawberry’s most recent crimes. â€Å"Robes and furr’d gowns hide all?† It’s quite the opposite in this case. The public eye has actually been nothing less than relentless in poring over and pointing fingers of shame and â€Å"look at him isn’t that terrible?!,† all at Darryl Strawberry, the rich and famous baseball hero. His sin is plated with anything but gold. But you know what? There might be some bum walking up the block from me right now, selling the same crack cocaine that got Mr. Strawberry in trouble. I wo uldn’t know about it, and neither would anybody else (law enforcement officials, for example). No one can see his small vices, despite his â€Å"tatter’d clothes.

Health Care Interview

There are many components to a hospital or medical facility. All of them are necessary to have a properly functioning environment. The emergency department of a hospital is a fast paced world. You have to be constantly on your toes and prepared for whatever may come through the doors. There are many people that work in an emergency room to make it run smoothly. Techs, nurses, CNA’s, LVN’s, and doctors all work side by side to help those who are critically injured. Without all these people it would be complete chaos. Triage is usually the first step of the emergency room and helps determine severity of each patient. Once through triage, the patient is either sent to a different area of emergency or another part of the hospital. The emergency department is usually broken down into different parts as well. Typically, there is a trauma area, an area for those less urgent, resuscitation areas, and even a psychiatric area. Trauma is reserved for those with life threatening injuries or illness and is always stocked with the equipment needed for these cases. Resuscitation areas are for those who come in unconscious or DOA (dead on arrival). These rooms are equipped with all the equipment necessary to try and save someone’s life. There are many things done in an emergency department. Vitals are the usually the first thing when a patient comes into the emergency room. An injury or illness may not be immediately visible; vitals are an easy way to see if anything is out of the ordinary right off the bat. When injury is more apparent, like a broken bone, x-rays can be done right in the emergency room. EKG’s are often performed on those complaining of chest pain. The emergency room also does the simple stuff like suturing wounds or doing ultrasounds. As you can see there is not much the emergency room cannot do. It is the center of the hospital. My interviewee specifically works in the emergency department of Valley Children’s Hospital. Although the primary patients are children eighteen years of age and younger, they will accept all patients until stabilized and able to be transported to the correct hospital. A children’s hospital is a type of specialty hospital. There are many other types of specialty hospitals, but this type specifically caters to children. The emergency at this hospital sees many different types of injuries and illness. Although, this hospital is well known for seeing the sickest children from Bakersfield to Sacramento, they care for kids with rare cancers and other life threatening illnesses. I chose to interview Jeff Gonzales who is a technician in the emergency room. Upon starting the interview, I quickly got the feeling that the technicians do a lot more than I would have thought. The technicians are usually the first person the patient deals with. They start the initial work up and take the vitals. After the nurses and doctors have decided on a proper course of treatment, the technicians often help with the procedures or getting the patient to the correct area of the hospital. The technicians may also draw blood for cultures or even splint a patient. â€Å"We are kind of all over the place, go where I am needed and help where I can,† explains Jeff. Like any good profession these days, there is some education that is required to attain a position like this. Jeff went to school for phlebotomy and was originally planning on being a fire fighter. After gaining the emergency training from the fire academy, Jeff was unfortunately injured and could no longer go after that career. However, his emergency training comes in handy for the emergency room, he states, â€Å"you have to be prepared for anything, having the EMT training helps me when things get hectic. † As for additional training, the only thing that needs to be kept to date is his phlebotomy license. All other training is provided by the hospital and is typically done on an annual basis. Working in an environment with so many different people could cause problems. You have to learn to trust your coworkers and work together to the best of your ability. Letting management know about any problems right away helps a lot because the issues can get addressed immediately. â€Å"Like any job, there may be that one person you do not get along with, but as long as you do your best to just do your job and avoid drama, you will be okay,† he says. Taking care of the patients is always the number one priority in hospitals. Jeff informed me that the best way to make it through the day is to be compassionate and have patience. Dealing with children can be hard, especially to those who have children of their own. When we lose a patient, it is hard not to take it personally,† he says. That is where the compassion comes in. Losing anyone is not a happy time, but dealing with children, it is difficult to not get attached. Being patient is important because you are dealing with kids. â€Å"Sometimes the children do not understand what we are asking o r why we are poking them, so being patient is very important,† says Jeff. Although there are many changes starting to roll out in health care, Jeff informed me that he has not personally experienced any of them so far. He explained that most of the changes occurring in his place of employment were in upper positions. He did mention that he thinks that technology has come a long way in the medical field and is heading the right direction. Electronic medical records have made every aspect of patient care easier and improved communication between doctors. Also, the advances in surgery have also made things in the emergency room easier. With lasers and other computer controlled surgeries, the turnaround for recovery is much lower and often times an overnight stay is not even necessary. After taking a deeper look into this department of a hospital it is easy to understand why it is so important. Without an emergency department, trauma and critically ill patients would have nowhere to go. With so many people in on place it is hard to keep things organized. All the parts of the department must function like a well-oiled machine to keep up with the chaos that occurs in emergency rooms. The teams of medical professionals have big responsibilities to their patients, especially the children.

Indians and the Battle of Wounded Knee essays

Indians and the Battle of Wounded Knee essays Can you imagine our world coexisting with Indians? It could have happened. If the Indians could have been pulled together and won the Battle of Wounded Knee. Your neighborhood could have been called Indian Estates and your next door neighbor could have been a Sioux. But they lost. American Indian extermination is best summed up in the words of Standing Bear of the Poncas, "When people want to slaughter cattle they drive them along until they get them to a corral, and then they slaughter them. So it was with us. "A tribe or even a race was destroyed for good in a short period of time. I am going to discuss how the Sioux tribe was destroyed and so was the Native American. The battle of Wounded Knee was the most important battle in our country today. According to Carl Waldman in the Atlas of North American Indian, the Sioux Indian was located throughout the Northern Plains of America. The Sioux were led by Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. The Sioux were known for being rebellious battlers that were warriors. According to Ann McGovern in her book If You Lived with the Sioux Indians, she talks about the Sioux and their ghost dances. It also talks about how the Sioux kept getting driven out and continued to move more west. According to Dee Brown Bury My Heart at Wounded at Knee, frozen corpses twisted into grotesque shapes. Women with little children strapped onto their backs. A mother holds on tightly to her young. 12-year-olds full of bullets. This is how the Indians were found. Death and destruction reigned everywhere on the banks of Wounded Knee Creek. According to Angie Debo in her book A History of the Indians of the United States, on December 29, 1890, after disarming the Sioux Indians, the rapid-fire Hotchkiss mountain cannons were used on them. These guns fired explosive shells weighing two pounds ten ounces at the rate of fifty per minute and had an effective range of 4, 200 yards. As the defenseless Indians fled, they were sho...

Feeding Frenzy Lab Essay Example

Feeding Frenzy Lab Essay Example Feeding Frenzy Lab Essay Feeding Frenzy Lab Essay We will use chemical reagents to test to determine the presence of macromolecules: Benedicts solution for sugar, Iodine for starch, Berets reagent for protein, and Sudan Ill for lipids. If we test buttermilk biscuits for starches, sugars, proteins and lipids then it will test positive for all. If we test potato chips for starches, sugars, proteins and lipids it will then test positive for lipids and starch. If we test peppers for starches, sugars, proteins and lipids then it will test positive for only sugar. If we test sardines for starches, sugars, proteins and lipids then it will only test positive for proteins and lipids. Our hypotheses is based on our knowledge of the four foods we are testing. When available we consulted nutritional provided on food label. The supplies we used are: Safety Goggles, Beakers, Hot Plate, Gloves, Benedicts Solution, a scale that measures grams, Test Tubes, Iodine, Measuring spoon, Test Tube rack, Beirut reagent, Kara Syrup (glucose), Test Tube Rack, Sudan Ill reagent, Laundry Starch, Eye Dropper, Brown Paper Bag, Egg Whites, Glass Stirring Rod, Fork, knife, spoon, Vegetable Oil, Distilled Water, Plastic Cups, Blender, Mortar and pestle, graduated cylinder, deuterium biscuits, potato chips, hot peppers and sardines. Complete the 15 Questions for Investigation. 3. Decide who is going to bring what foods. Hint: lighter color foods yield more a accurate results. ABA 1 . Create positive and negative test controls for each mac romolecule test. A. Lipids Positive Controlling a test tube 4/5 full with vegetable Oil. Pour 10 drops of Sudan Ill into the test tube with the vegetable oil. : Label the test tube as p costive control lipids using masking tape and place in the test tube rack. Negative Controlling a test tube 4/5 full with distilled water. Pour 10 drops of Sudan Ill into the test tube with the water. Label the test tube as en active control lipids using masking tape and place in the test tube rack. A. Sugar Positive Controlling 1 Go of Kara Syrup with mill of distilled water in a beaker. Fill a test tube 4/5 with the solution. Pour 10 drops of Benedicts Soul Zion into the test tube. Clean the beaker. Fill the beaker full of water. Place the beaker full of water on a to plate and turn the hotplate on high. Place the test tube in the beaker full of water and boil for 5 minutes. Label the test tube as positive control sugar using masking TA pee and place in the test tube rack. Negative Controlling a test tube 4/5 full Of distilled Water. Pour 10 drops of Benedicts Solution into the test tube. Fill a beaker full of water. Place the b eager full of water on a hot plate and turn the hotplate on high. Place the test tube in the beaker full of water and boil for 5 minutes. Label the test tube as negative control gaff u sing masking tape and place in the test tube rack. . Protein Positive Controlling leg of eightieth powder (or albumen) with mill of distilled water in a beaker using a glass stirring rod until all of the powder is did solved. Pour the solution into a beaker until the beaker is 4/5 full. Pour 10 drops of Beirut reagent into the test tube with the solution. Label the test tube as positive control protein SSI Eng masking tape and place in the test tube rack. Negative Control Fill a test tube 4/5 full with distilled water. Pour 10 drops of Beirut reagent into the test tube with the water. Label the test tube as negative intro protein using masking tape and place in the test tube rack. A. Starch Positive Controlling 1 g of corn starch with mill of distilled water in a beaker using a glass stirring rod until all of the powder is dissolved. Pour the solution into a beaker until the beaker is 4/5 full. Pour 10 drops of iodine reagent into the t est. tube with the solution. Label the test tube as positive control starch using masking tape an d place in the test tube rack. Drops of iodine reagent into the test tube with the water. Label the test tube control starch using masking tape and place in the test tube rack. . Make the foods you are testing into a solution. A. This can be done With a mortar and pistil or a blender. Place your crunched u p food into a beaker. Add water to your food in the beaker to make it into a solution. Filter the chunks out by pouring the solution through a screen and/ or cheesecloth into another beaker. 2. Pour the food solution into as many test tubes as the number of tests you are performing. For example, if you are testing for starch, sugar, protein, and lip ads you will need four test tubes. Label each test tube with the food that is being tests and the macromolecule you are testing for using masking tape. 3. Place 10 drops of the appropriate reagent in the appropriate test tube. A. Sugar Benedicts Solution must be heated with food in order to produce a result b. Starch Iodine c. Protein Beirut reagent d. Lipid Sudan Ill reagent 4. Compare your results to the positive and negative test controls. 5. Record your data in a data table 6. Complete a lab report by following the lab report template. All sections are re quirked except calculations. 7. Type up your lab report using Google docs and invite all interested parties. . Post your lab report on your unit 2 weeping. The trial calls for multiple tests and multiple tests should be done to get the b est. results. The independent variable is food type, while sugar, lipids, protein, starch are t he dependent variable. The control variable and what must be kept constant is the + starch, + protein, + Lipid, + sugar. In a way thats the control trial and what you compare results to . Your suppose to test for + starch, + protein, + Lipid, + sugar and see if your food is positive n active starch, protein, lipid, and sugar. Data and Calculations Observations During this experiment we observed how the color of our food distillations changed with the different solutions. Each solution reacts differently. For example, when testing for the pepper for starch, iodine was added, and when the solution turned dark and cloudy, compared to the control it was obviously a protein positive.

Close reading Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Close reading - Essay Example He not only physically describes the woman but also creates a contrast between her early privileged life and her life as a servant now. He uses strong heavy words in describing her past, words like castle, robes, princess and many more that create a lasting impression of the luxurious life the women had before. These words create a very powerful and impactful picture in the reader’s mind. ‘I have not always been blear–eyed.’ He starts off with this sentence which appeals to the reader. This sentence creates a mystery for the reader as automatically the reader gets interested in the idea of what that woman must have been before the present story line. The reader would inevitably be forced to read ahead and find out what the woman’s past holds, indeed. Also in choosing the title of the chapter the author has hidden a mystery which makes the reader continue. He uses a sarcastic humorous tone in comparing her clothes and home to the living of German baro ns when he states that the woman’s robe alone could have bought half the province of Westphalia. Voltaire pays a lot of attention to the description of things in the book in general, in this paragraph in particular he is describing the younger version of the woman, and he looks closely at the changes that show in a woman when she becomes older. He not only highlights her character by using words like ‘wisdom’ and her ‘graceful accomplishments’, but also goes on commenting on her physical changes when he talks about her breasts, eyebrows and eyes, creates an image by using very simple words but such that would clearly paint a picture of that woman in the reader’s eyes. He uses metaphors to make the description feel real, ‘her eyebrows as black as jet’. Using metaphors makes it easier for the reader to relate to the portrayal of a character. Voltaire uses very bold words in the depiction of the image of that woman, ‘as for my eyes, they darted flames and eclipsed the lustre of the Stars’. Other than describing the woman with words and metaphors he adds in the story testimony of other characters in the story which further proves his depiction of the character. It is a unique and different yet effective way of portraying a character. Looking at the writing style of author in these paragraphs it can be seen that he is not just describing the character for its image but is also moving the story ahead in that description, and how he moves from the present of the character to her past, and in her past from the age of fourteen to the age where she was all ready to marry. In describing the ceremony of the nuptials he manages to capture the royalty of the family she belonged to by using a word like ‘magnificence’. Voltaire often uses direct dialogues in continuing the story making it feel like a film to the reader. Other than using direct dialogues he also uses the feeling of the character lik e ‘I loved him, too, as our sex generally for the first time, with rapture, transport, and idolatry’ which makes it easier for the reader to understand and connect with the characters. Although the author is describing everything in detail painting a vivid picture of that woman and her past he still manages to keep it all very concise and to the point without dragging it, which keeps the reader involved. The coherent link between the description and the story line makes it easier for the reader to follow and keep up with the extensive description. In all the

The role of technology and management for the success of an Essay

The role of technology and management for the success of an organization - Essay Example Organizational effectiveness can be achieved by employing diversified resources, advanced technology, suitable policies, procedures and systems that help in achieving organizational goals. Management of these critical components becomes extremely important not only from strategic viewpoint but also to actually derive the intended benefits. One such practice is diversity management, which organizations adopt to build better working relationship among employees and with management. This study critically views Mintzberg’s assertions related to managerial role in implementing diversity management. Theoretical construct: Mintzberg defines management as a practice that has to blend a good deal of craft (experience) with a certain amount of art (insight) and some science (analysis) (2009; p.xii). Mintzberg’s (2009) viewpoint about management is abstract, and managers’ discretion and purpose have to underpin their decisions, which need to be aligned to the organizational goals. This is, somewhat, an extension of Skinner’s (1974) proposition on bringing congruency between elements of production system and organizational goals. For instance, one of the propositions to improve performance is to include highly skilled and technologically sound workforce, which is also one of the functions of diversity management. For this, organizations employ various practices such as hiring employees with diversified skills and from different backgrounds. Skinner’s (1974) proposition with respect to workforce actually helps managers in leveraging their insight, analysis and experience in employ ing skilled workforce. Literature findings: Surgevil (2010) constructs his proposition related to diversity management in the Turkish setup based on the fact that increasing impact of globalization, advancements in technology, changing organizational structures and systems have affected Turkish organizations more than ever before. Advancement in technology that has resulted in greater communication media, effective communication and vast opportunities to communicate and learn has been the major factors affecting organizational systems; in a sense, this advancement has also been the cause for increased competition, globalization, and aggression in the service and production industry throughout the world.
